The Essential Caribbean Packing List
What to pack for the Caribbean: the suitcase

If you’re staying at a resort or island, I recommend traveling with a hard spinner, like the Samsonite Omni 20-inch PC. However, if you have multiple transfers or are on a boat for part of your trip, I recommend a water-resistant hybrid bag, like the Helly Hansen Duffel.
What to Pack for the Caribbean: Personal Item

For my trip to the Caribbean, I brought my Dagne Dover tote as a personal item. I knew I would need extra space for my electronics and a change of clothes, so I opted for a bag that would give me a little extra space.
What to Pack for the Caribbean: Onboard Essentials
In the excitement of getting ready for your beach getaway, don’t forget to pack your bags for the days of travel that will take you there.
- Headphones : For rear-seat entertainment. Most direct flights to the Caribbean last on average around four hours, so you have plenty of time to watch a few movies.
- Collapsible water bottle: This model from Hydaway saves storage space when not in use. Depending on which island you visit, you may also be able to drink the tap water.
- Compressed: It’s practical for working and/or reading.
- Phone and charger: This may seem like a no-brainer, but in the rush to get out the gate and out of the airport on time, don’t forget your most important essentials. Throw a TSA-approved power bank in your bag to stay charged even when you’re far from an outlet.
What to Pack for the Caribbean: Shoes

You’ll want to pack these four shoe categories for your Caribbean adventures, even if you plan to spend most of your time barefoot on the beach.
- Casual Slip-On Shoes Or sneakers: This pair from Rockport was ideal for travel days, casual dinners, and walks around town.
- Water shoes: You will need water shoes for water activities in the Caribbean.
- Flip flops: For the beach and walks in seaside resorts.
- Elegant sandals or heels: If you plan to go out or go to fancier restaurants, bring a pair of low heels or sandals.
What to Pack for the Caribbean: Clothing

The ideal Caribbean vacation wardrobe is beachy, breezy and versatile. Focus on pieces that can be layered and work for multiple activities, from the beach to after-dinner drinks.
- Shorts: Pack a few pairs of casual shorts (jeans or chinos) as well as athletic shorts for any hike or water activity.
- Quick Dry Layered Tops: Bring a few pairs of tank tops and/or short sleeves for excursions.
- Light sweater: I packed a light sweater for travel days and to cover up when needed.
- Swimwear And cover: Beach attire required.
- Long dress or long skirt: For outings and dinners. For men, bring chinos if you’re going to a more formal resort or restaurant.
- Light shawl: I always travel with a neutral shawl that can serve as a scarf, travel blanket, or cover-up.
What to Pack for the Caribbean: Toiletries

A good toiletry bag for any trip should include the essentials: a toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, over-the-counter medications, and any personal care items you can’t live without. For a trip to the Caribbean, here are some additional necessities you’ll want to add:
- Insect spray And anti-itch cream: Mosquitoes are common in the Caribbean, with some areas at risk for Zika, so you’ll need a powerful spray and relief.
- Sunscreen And aloe: Always travel with natural, reef-friendly sunscreen. In case of burns, carry aloe or after-sun cream.
- Lotion wipes: I like to travel with a pack of these to cool me down during the day and to quickly freshen up after a day at the beach.
- Moisturizing facial mist: My must-have on hot days in the sun.
- Lip balm with SPF: While summiting the mountain, you’ll definitely need this on hand.
- Reusable plastic storage bags: They’re perfect for wet swimsuits, dirty laundry, extra toiletries, or as a dry bag for your phone.
What to Pack for the Caribbean: Gadgets

A trip to the beach is the perfect opportunity to unplug and relax, but that doesn’t mean you have to leave all the technology behind. Consider what activities will fill your relaxation time: will you need a waterproof smartwatch to reach your fitness goals or an e-reader to keep you occupied while you lounge by the pool? However, the two main pieces of technology you should never travel without are:
- Backup phone charger: If you plan to take a lot of photos and videos on your phone and it will drain your battery, bring a backup charger.
- Adapter: If you are going to a non-US island, you may need an adapter. Check with your accommodation beforehand if you are unsure. Travel with an adapter that also has USB ports for multi-use charging.
What to Pack for the Caribbean: Accessories

These extras become essential when it comes to packing for a trip to a sunny island.
- Sun hat: A brimmed hat is a good idea to protect yourself from the sun.
- Foldable tote bag: Pack a simple style that can serve as a market tote, beach bag, or to hold your camera bag.
- Sunglasses: Pack a sportier, more affordable pair in case something happens to them.
- Shoulder bag: For night or day outings.
What to Pack for the Caribbean (What I Didn’t Do)

Don’t make these packing mistakes! Consider bringing:
- Books Or card games: You’ll want some form of entertainment, whether it’s a hard copy of the book you’re reading or a game of cards for downtime at the beach.
- Diving equipment: If you own your own scuba gear, weigh your rental or bring options. Equipment is readily available for rental, but if you want your own fins and mask and will be enjoying the water most days, you may want to bring your own.
- Dry bag Or phone protector: You will definitely want this if you are at the beach or on boats and visiting the islands. I used plastic bags, but wish I had brought a dry bag.
- Travel insurance: If you are traveling during hurricane season, it is advisable to take out travel insurance with a TCI clause.
What Not packing for the Caribbean
There’s really only one category you want to avoid when packing for a Caribbean vacation: warm clothing. The beauty of the Caribbean is that it is warm all year round. You won’t need warm clothes or rain gear unless you’re traveling during hurricane season. Instead, focus on lightweight layered pieces that can be easily removed and stored in purses and beach bags.
